Why is Journalist's Day celebrated

Journalist's Day is a special date on our official calendar in which we celebrate people who are dedicated to social communication. It is celebrated every June 27 and is an opportunity to pay tribute to them but also to reflect on the importance of journalism in Venezuela and the world.

Every day, journalists have the hard work of telling the what, who, where, when, how and why what happens in the country and the world. The Day of the Journalist is like this, a recognition of the hard work they do in favor of truthfulness and freedom of expression.

How was the Journalist's Day born?

Journalist's Day has been celebrated every June 27 since 1965 , due to a proposal made by journalist Guillermo García Ponce before the Fourth National Convention of the Venezuelan Association of Journalists. García proposed this day in homage and anniversary of the first edition of "El Correo del Orinoco" ; newspaper that was founded by Simón Bolívar and that was considered the most important of the independence.

Before that, the Day of the Journalist was celebrated on October 24, the date on which the written press in the country began with the publication of the first edition of "La Gaceta de Caracas", in the year 1080, however by Guillermo García Ponce's proposal was moved to June 27.

In 1994, the Law for the Exercise of Journalism in Venezuela confirmed that the Journalist's Day would be celebrated every June 27 in commemoration of the birth of “El Correo del Orinoco”.
